Newcastle Promise Board is a citywide partnership lead by Headteachers to shape our approach to sector-led improvement.
With changes to how schools and local authorities are funded coinciding with changes to how a number of schools are governed, it has long been the desire of Newcastle to create a formal partnership to enable schools to have a unified voice and to support a sector led school system. To that end, Newcastle City Council commissioned the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) to facilitate work with schools to develop a vision for such a partnership and to develop a strategy for progressing this.
The ‘shadow board’ met throughout 2017 to create the Newcastle Promise and explore how the board may work in practice. Draft proposals were shared with Newcastle Head teachers and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Agreement on representation for the board was proposed by school leaders and is based on geographical school groups, taking account of pupil numbers.
Whilst not established as a specific legal entity or legal partnership the Board shares a long term vision for the delivery of excellence in the education of children and young people in Newcastle.
